Sugar substitutes

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved the following health claims for sugar substitutes
(xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, laltitol, lactitol, isomalt, erythritol, sucralose and polydextrose)
:

  • The consumption of foods/drinks that contain one of the above-mentioned sugar substitutes instead of sugar causes the blood sugar level to rise less sharply after consumption than when consuming foods/drinks containing sugar
  • Consuming foods/drinks that contain one of the above-mentioned sugar substitutes instead of sugar helps to maintain tooth mineralization
