Roter Reis wird durch Fermentation von weißem Reis mit dem Schimmelpilz Monascus purpureus gewonnen und enthält den natürlichen Wirkstoff Monacolin K, der chemisch identisch mit dem synthetischen Arzneistoff Lovostatin ist.
Lovastatin gehört zur Wirkstoffgruppe der Statine, die zur Behandlung erhöhter Cholesterinwerte, Triglyceridwerte und zur Verhinderung einer Koronararteriensklerose angewendet werden.
