Red rice is obtained by fermenting white rice with the mould Monascus purpureus and contains the natural active ingredient monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the synthetic drug lovostatin.
Lovastatin belongs to the active substance group of statins, which are used to treat elevated cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and to prevent coronary artery sclerosis.
